ABOUT THIS HUNT:
My guide Kurt Sandbburg had done a fine job scouting this particular deer and was confident with a storm moving in we'd have a good chance of seeing him again.
Sure enough, just before dark he stepped out into an alfalfa field to feed.
We glassed him from 600 yards and put a stalk on to a pile of stones we would use for cover about 250 yards away. Some of the animals already feeding in the field were definitely on to us and began slowly moving off. Our buck was not liking what was happening one little bit and he lifted his head. When you hunt deer long enough you recognize their behavior instantly like that familiar Aunt at the Thanksgiving table. You just have a sense of when the timing is right. The timing was definitely right! This bad boy was fixin to bolt! That's when the hammer went down and he piled up right there on the spot.
I absolutely love to hunt Mulies in Colorado and this hunt went down in my personal record book! The Mule Deer wasn't too shabby either, he later scored a 32" wide spread and 200 inches!
